Our Story
Thottil (தொட்டில்) means "cradle" in Tamil — the first safe space a child knows. We're two sisters who chose slow, intentional work over the fast and easy. Tired of aisles full of plastic and flashing lights, we set out to bring back toys that smell like wood, sit with real weight in tiny hands, and invite actual play — not batteries.Every Thottil toy is 100% solid wood, hand-finished by artisans across India using food-safe, non-toxic materials. No shortcuts, no plywood — just pieces made to be played with, passed down, and loved for generations. Built to last. Made to be an heirloom.
What We Do
We curate Montessori-inspired toy designs and work with skilled craftspeople across India to bring them to life in solid wood.
We find designs that support how children naturally learn and play—simple, purposeful, open-ended. We adapt them, refine them, and create detailed specifications: wood type, dimensions, finish, safety standards. Then we partner with craftspeople who have the skill to make them real.
Every product is 100% solid wood. No plywood. No particle board. No shortcuts.
Why Thottil
Thottil means cradle in Tamil. It’s the
first wooden thing that holds a child safely. A cradle is built to last generations because it holds something precious. We wanted toys that could do the same. Not plastic that breaks in weeks. Not cheap alternatives that end up in landfills. Solid wood toys that can handle real play and be passed down.
Quality that's built to last multiple childhoods.
Building for Tomorrow
We believe the future needs less stuff and
better stuff. Materials from nature. Products designed for longevity. Toys that
don't become waste.
We're learning as we go. We're not perfect.
But we're trying to build something honest—where quality is standard, not premium, and sustainability isn't a marketing word.
This is our bet on a different way.
